Discover the wonders of the Amazon Rainforest and connect with local communities on a thrilling adventure of a lifetime!
Over three days you will visit an indigenous village and learn about life in the Amazon from those who call it home. Enjoy being hosted by an indigenous family, fishing like a local and eating delicious traditional food. You will have the opportunity to go jungle trekking in the amazing Amazon Rainforest and learn about the incredible plants and wildlife that live in the forest.
As you boat along the worldโs longest river make sure to look out for the magnificent pink and grey dolphins and exotic birds along the way!
Itinerary:
There are two exciting 3-day Amazon adventures to choose from. Pick one of the following options based on your interests (itineraries listed below).
- Javari Expedition โ Choose this option if you want to maximise your time with an indigenous community
- Amazonas Express โ Choose this option if you want to visit an indigenous village before exploring the riverside town of Puerto Nariรฑo and Tarapoto Lakes
Javari Expedition (3 day Amazon tour including visit to indigenous village and jungle night walk)
DAY 1
- Depart Leticia at 9 am and enjoy a 1 hour boat tour on the Amazon River to the indigenous village
- Hike for approximately 20 minutes to the house of a local indigenous family (where you will spend the night)
- Take part in artisanal fishing before enjoying a traditional lunch
- Trek into the jungle where you can spot animals in their natural habitat
- Return to the house around 5.30pm for a traditional dinner
DAY 2
- Breakfast at 8 am before spending morning visiting the indigenous community
- Traditional lunch at 12:30 pm
- Help prepare camp in the afternoon
- After dark, take a guided night walk to see tarantulas, scorpions, caimans and other jungle creatures
- Enjoy a traditional dinner before spending the night camping in the jungle
DAY 3
- Breakfast at 8 am and depart by boat at 9am
- Spot river dolphins on a boat tour down the Amazon River
- Return to the traditional indigenous house to have lunch
- Return to Leticia
Amazonas Express (3 day Amazon tour including visit to indigenous village, Puerto Nariรฑo and Tarapoto Lakes)
DAY 1
- Depart Leticia at 8 am and enjoy a boat ride along the Amazon River observing the local birds and river dolphins
- Arrive at an indigenous village for a traditional lunch
- In the afternoon, hike through the Amazon jungle
- After a traditional dinner take a night walk in the jungle to spot nocturnal wildlife
- Spend the night either in a jungle camp, house of an indigenous family or a cabin of a Natural Reserve (guests to choose before start of trip)
DAY 2
- After breakfast, watch the sunrise over the Amazon Rainforest where you can see monkeys and other early morning animals
- In the afternoon, after lunch, navigate along the Amazon River towards Puerto Nariรฑo village
- Arrive in Puerto Nariรฑo around 4-5pm and watch the sunset over the Tarapoto Lakes
- After dinner, spend the night either in a cabin in front of the Tarapoto Lakes or in a hotel in Puerto Nariรฑo (guests to choose before start of trip)
DAY 3
- After breakfast, spend the morning exploring Puerto Nariรฑo and go up to the viewpoint
- Enjoy the last traditional lunch together as a group before returning back to Leticia along the Amazon river
- Arrive in Leticia round 5-6pm
Accommodation:
All tours include 2 nightsโ hostel accommodation in Leticia, the night before the tour and the night of the last day of the tour. Hipilandia Amazonas Hostel provides basic but comfortable private rooms and dorms, a shared kitchen and common areas where guests can relax and socialise.
Accommodation on the other nights will be either jungle camping or staying in a traditional indigenous home or a cabin. Please see the relevant tour itinerary above for details.
Food:
All meals are included, from lunch on the first day of the tour to lunch on the last day.
Vegetarians and vegans and other dietary restrictions can be catered for. Please inform Tarapoto Amazonas in advance of any dietary requirements.
Location:
All tours begin and end in Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia.
How to Get There:
There are only two ways to reach Leticia: by plane or by boat.
The only direct flights to Leticia are from Bogota, Colombiaโs capital, and take 2 hours.
If you are coming from Peru, it is possible to take a boat along the Amazon River from Iquitos to Leticia (via Santa Rosa Island near the Peru-Colombia border). The fast ferry takes around 18 hours and the slow boat takes about 3 days.

FAQs
- What is the best month to visit the Amazon?
The Amazon has two seasons: wet and dry. The wet season runs from around December to May and the dry season from June to November. There is no good or bad time to visit as you will be able to see amazing wildlife, stunning plants and spectacular scenery at any time of year. You should also expect some rain whatever time of year you visit. It is the rainforest after all! - Do I need to be fit to join the tour?
The Javari Expedition and Amazonas Express tours both require a moderate level of fitness. There is some hiking involved, but nothing too strenuous. - What should I bring?
Suggested packing list (please note you will be provided with rubber boots to wear on the tour):-

- Do I have to carry my own luggage?
Yes. We recommend taking a small day pack with only the essentials listed above. You can leave your main luggage at the hostel in Leticia. - Iโm vegetarian / vegan / have dietary requirements. Can I be catered for?
Yes, dietary requirements, including vegetarian and vegan options, can be catered for. Tarapoto Amazonas Jungle Tours will request your requirements before the start of the tour. - Will I join a group?
Guests booking for the same date will be grouped together. Tours run with a maximum group size of 6 people. Please note that the prices stated here are based on a minimum of 3 people joining the tour. Tours running with fewer than 3 people will have a higher cost per person. - Will my guide speak English?
Yes. The price of the tour includes an English-speaking guide. Please note that the tours also run with Spanish-speaking guides at a slightly reduced rate. Please contact us if you would like to book a Spanish-speaking tour.
Payment:
To reserve your place on this tour you will need to pay a deposit online with South America Backpacker via credit or debit card.
The remaining balance will be paid directly to Tarapoto Amazonas Jungle Tours who will send payment information upon confirmation of your booking.
