Hostel Mamallena, Cartagena, Colombia
What makes Hostel Mamallena unique?
Spectacular social vibe: There’s a great social area at Mamallena so the emphasis is on getting to know the other adventurers who are around. You can chill out in the graffiti-covered communal area, hang out in the well-stocked bar or cook communal meals in the tidy little kitchen.
Amazing Staff: Sometimes hostels are simply a place to throw down your pack and rest your feet, and then there are times when a dose of spirit has been pumped into the place. When you come to Mamallena you’ll feel the love that owner, Stuart, and the staff have for this hostel, the backpacking community and the country of Colombia. Stuart also owns the incredibly popular Mamallena in Panama City so he really knows his stuff.
Plan your San Blas Adventure: If your hoping to hit the high seas on a swashbuckling Caribbean adventure then Mamallena is the place to start planning. Stuart, the owner, (who also owns the sister hostel ‘Mamallena’ in Panama, can help you. There is a lot to think about – from choosing a good boat (there are many available and they all have very different vibes), to working out what to pack for a five-day adventure at sea! To find out more about the San Blas, read this in-depth report on the adventure by our South American Ambassador, The Broke Backpacker.
An Array of Activities: Cartagena, in general, is an amazing place to spend some time; party by night and explore the old city by day. Mamallena’s staff can help you get your bearings, arrange day trips to some of the nearby beaches or the famous mud volcano or even hook you up with an ‘obscure walking tour’.
Great value rooms: For a hostel slap bang in one of the most happening streets in Cartagena, Mamallena has a whole range of rooms available to fit every budget; from cheap dorms to semi-luxurious privates.
How to get there? Once you are in Cartagena, simply catch a taxi – all the drivers know the hostel Mamallena and it shouldn’t cost more than a couple of dollars to get there from pretty much anywhere in the city. Alternatively, if you fancy walking, make your way to Calle Media Luna – the street which the hostel is on. Mamallena is directly opposite Media Luna Hostel – which is a great place to party (but not to sleep!).
Prices: Dorms starting at 25,000 COP, basic privates from 45,000 COP and AC Privates with en-suites for 80,000 COP.
